Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between worm castings and Basecamp™?
Worm castings are the foundation of every Fed 'n Happy product. Basecamp starts with our castings and adds biochar and composted organic material, making it a complete soil-building blend. Choose castings to boost soil and mixes you already have, and Basecamp to build new beds or rebuild tired ground.
Can I use too much?
On farm fields, over-applying worm castings is rarely a risk to plant health. They're gentle and won't burn crops.
In gardens, raised beds and containers, it's possible to overdo it. Castings are very fine and hold a lot of water, so too much in a small space can lead to compaction, poor drainage and a nutrient imbalance. For best results, mix castings in rather than using them alone. [ADD: your rule of thumb, e.g., "keep castings to about 20–30% of your potting mix"]
Do worm castings smell?
No. Good castings have a clean, earthy smell, like a forest floor.
How should I store them, and how long do they keep?
Store in a cool, shaded spot and keep slightly moist. Best used within ___ months.
How are castings shipped, and what does FOB Hutchinson mean?
You can pick up your order at our Hutchinson, KS facility, or we can arrange shipping. FOB (Free on Board) Hutchinson means ownership and responsibility pass to you once the carrier picks up and signs for the order at our dock. From that point you own the product in transit, and any freight damage claims go through the carrier. Or we can arrange shipping.
